Week 5
So the words
“No more gimmicks!” has been my mantra for this latest battle of the
bulge! I promised myself there would be
no more use of any of these out of nowhere diets from so called diet experts or
diet gurus and none of their crazy ass products! First, because most of them do not work and
second, because if they do work, the minute you go off of them… THE WEIGHT
COMES RIGHT BACK!
Let me take
you on a little trip down Memory Lane… I have been put on a diet since I was in
the third grade. This might not mean
anything to you, but when most of your childhood has been rewarded and
comforted with a lot of love and culinary rewards, the minute they tell you “NO”
starts to mess with your head! I truly
believe that hearing the word “NO” because of parent implemented diets, really
gave me the basis that helps me succeed in Show Business (No matter how small
the successes are!), because when I hear “NO”, inside my head, I hear the word “MAYBE!”
So eating
healthy as a kid is very trendy now and on the “IN”, but when I was a kid, we
were raised on the food pyramid and were taught that PROTEINS were the top of
the food chain and grains down on the bottom.
Choosing fruit and vegetables wasn’t an option and we were told we would
be a lot healthier if we ate more “Beef” and several other things that well… we
wouldn’t do now.
I remember
there was pamphlet out that recommended that if you wanted to lose weight,
instead of cake or candy trY “Cream cheese rolled into balls and then coated
with nuts!” Later, I also learned to
read who was sponsoring this suggestion… it was PHILADELPHIA CREAM CHEESE! I look back now and well, I don’t think they
had my best interest in mind when they were suggesting eating balls of cream
cheese for healthy living.
There was
also a diet plan put out by Weight Watchers that key to selling it was “NO EXERCISE
NEEDED!” Yeah… you have to love that
one, but that was the mentality back then.
We were all living off McDonalds and the 5 Basic Food Groups. We believed a Cheeseburger, French Fries and
a Coke were not just filling our stomachs, but were healthy for us. No one told us they weren’t good for you and
when you’re a kid and your friends are all sucking down coke from their Star
Wars McDonald Glass with the plastic mini Frisbee top… you don’t want to be
chomping on celery and carrots!
So let me
list a whole bunch of programs & gimmicks I have spent money on and lost
nothing…. These are the ones I remember!
1. HERBALIFE
weight loss claims are probably largely attributable to the use of ephedrine in
their "Thermajetic" green formulas. I've seen firsthand evidence of
the weight loss possible through the use of amphetamines, and because ephedrine
is so closely related to amphetamines, I'll bet it works in a similar way. Ephedrine is a powerful stimulant. It was
used in the 80s and 90s by athletes & truck drivers to give their energy a
boost & stave off hunger.
The FDA began collecting data on ill-effects from ephedrine in 1994 or 1995.
A report in the New England Journal of Medicine in November 2000 said that at least 54 deaths and about 1,000 reports of complications have been linked to the popular bodybuilding supplement since the mid-1990s. The FDA has since said about 80 deaths have been associated with Ephedrine.
The NFL banned its use among their athletes in September of 2001, joining the NCAA and International Olympic Committee.
Due to these health and safety concerns, Herbalife reformulated their Green formula without Ephedrine, although the original formula is still available as "Original Green" outside of Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Ohio, Michigan, Hawaii and Texas.
Dexa-Diets -
Dexatrim suggests that its diet supplement is most effective when combined with
a balanced diet and consistent exercise. It's argued that the same results can
be found when you simply eat right and exercise.
You can find
Dexatrim in several different varieties, including Dexatrim Max Complex 7, Dexatrim
Daytime Appetite Control, Dexatrim Max Slim Packs, Dexatrim Natural Green Tea,
and Dexatrim Extra Energy.
Now I don’t
know what the “old formula” was made up of, but I first got them from a friend
in High School and she was a dancer obsessed with weight loss. They were called Dexa-Diets and were, at the
time, the advanced version of Dexatrim pills.
They called them “Christmas Trees” because the bottom half of the pill
was green and the other half of the pill was clear, filled with multi-colored
little balls. Most of the pill was caffeine,
but basically it was a legal form of speed.
We use to take them to promote weight loss and speed our way through the
day. I stopped taking them when one day
I took too many and ended up puking my brains out for several hours that night.
The Banana
Diet – No purchase necessary! Don’t know
where I got this one, but it consisted of eating only bananas and drinking
milk. WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING? Didn’t last long!!!
Jenny Craig –
Buy the food from them, cook it up, write it down and go to meetings. Not bad and lost a few pounds, but what
happens when you get off it and go back to cooking your own… your portion
control goes out the window and flavor comes back by adding things you shouldn’t! Another temp solution to the real problem.
Isagenix –
You know you are off to a bad start when the woman who is the “Group Leader”
call to tell you how “Next year is going to be a big profit year for everyone
and we’re all going to get rich!”
Basically, that’s what she said; I’m paraphrasing a bit, but no mention
of weight loss, just profits!
So basically
you started with a 3 day fast and only drinking filtered water with their
supplements added to it (Looked like Apple Juice, tasted like Apple Vinegar)
and then you went on to use their shake supplements and chewable chocolate
tablets. I did lose some weight with
this, but the thing is the base of their shakes was ground, powdered olive
oil! Basically you were taking in a
natural laxative and spending long moments of agony on the toilet. You really had to pay attention to one
warning on the label “DO NOT DRINK SODA WHILE USING THIS PRODUCT” not because
it was dangerous to your health, but because adding the carbonated water to the
olive oil powder… well, it’s kind of like dropping Pop Rocks into a half filled
bottle of water and then tightening the cap on it…. All that gas and something is
gonna explode! Most of the time it was
my back side!!!
The Cookie
Diet – (This was my fave!) Eat a cookie bar for breakfast. Eat another cookie bar for lunch! THEN eat any healthy dinner you want and
drink eight, eight ounce glasses of water a day. I forget the name of the company and the
brand of the bars, but the price was off the hook and came to about $3.00 a
bar! A doctor talked me into this one!
No-Name
weight loss pill – I really wish I remembered the name of the pill and could
find it on the web. You took the pills
and they filled your stomach and you miraculously were not hungry and didn’t
even want to eat. I didn’t take them
very long because I didn’t think they were working. A year later on the news they had the pills
on a special report because whatever was in them would turn to a plastic and
would become sharp and could rip open your stomach and kill you. It killed a person in NY and well… they didn’t
do my sewer line any good either!
There you
have it! Tommy’s Folly’s? Nah… just mistakes, but here is the one I
liked best and stuck with for years till the changed the program. I did this one and lost 100lbs in a year and
kept it off for about 7 years.
PHYSICIANS
WEIGHT LOSS CENTERS – You weighed in 7 days a week for 2 weeks and then 3 days
a week from there on in. You got
B-Complex vitamin shots once a week, every week (I don’t know if they promoted
weight loss, but I didn’t get sick at all that year, not one cold!). You got Blood Pressure taken each time and an
EKG once a month. Each visit you had to
bring in a urine sample that they dipped a Ketone stick into and they could
tell by the count if you were burning calories or if you had cheated from the diet. Shake or soup supplements you had to take with
each meal, a daily vitamin and potassium powders added to you water (Again 8,
8oz glasses a day). You started off on
500 calories for 3 days and then you went to 600, then 700 and then 700 Select
(That means you could choose your own foods) and they had to be steamed,
grilled or broiled with a cup of cook vegetables, a cup of raw vegetables and a
salad with very little olive oil!
This was the
one that worked and I mean really worked.
It was hard to stay on, but once I did lock into it, I was losing 3-5lbs
a week. Again soon as you went off it
though… WEIGHT GAIN, but I lost 100lbs on this in one year and was so good they
were going to make me their TV Commercial Rep.
Then as with
all companies, they started to make money, got bought up and changed the
program. They got rid of the supplements
and the vitamin shots. The owners
changed everything and I didn’t like the program anymore because I wasn’t
losing weight once they changed it. They
also got you off of food you bought and cooked from the supermarket and took on
the Nutrisystem approach and tried to get me to buy all my meals from
them. I did keep most of the bulk off
for 7 years and put it all back when I started to work nights and went back to
eating wrong.
Doing it
this time my words are “NO GIMMICKS”! I
will no longer try anything suggested anyone that is selling something. I will only eat real food either prepared by
me or in a restaurant. I will only make
the healthy choice and try to scale down portions whenever possible.
AND
EXERCISE!
That’s all I’m
doing this time and I will not pressure myself if the scale shows a gain in
weight. I will not stop myself from
eating things, only thing I will control is the portion size, but if I want to
eat a palm sized, ¼ inch cheesecake square….. I’m eating it with no guilt!
I’m
recording it all by using the LOSE IT! App on my phone and am drinking more
than 64oz of water a day, but that’s about it for programs. I feel great and like doing it this way.
So here are
the results for this week….
